Conversational Footnotes
At Raymond's request
The awesome article on childhood play spaces is Jenkins, Henry "Complete Freedom of Movement: Video Games as Gendered Play Spaces" in Cassell, Justine and Jenkins, Henry (eds), From Barbie To Mortal Kombat: Gender and Computer Games, The MIT Press, Cambridge MA 1999 - the whole anthology rocks (and is much better than the "sequel" that came out this year).
The famous Latour piece about the sign on the door is Latour, Bruno, "Where Are The Missing Masses: The Sociology of A Few Mundane Artifacts," which you can find in pretty much any sociology of science or science & technology studies anthology. It really is the most charming academic article I've read, and *amazingly* readable for a French postmodernist
The catflap article is Ashmore, M. (1993). "Behaviour Modification of a
Catflap: a contribution to the Sociology of Things." Kennis en Methode 17:
214-229. I've got a PDF if anybody cares
Another one - which might be a good jumping-off point for thinking about agency and NPCs (ooo, I might assign that in my class next semester if I'm feeling cruel enough....) is Callon, M. (1986). Some Elements of a Sociology of Translation: Domestication of the Scallops and the Fishermen of Saint Brieuc Bay. In J. Law (Ed.) Power, Action and Belief: a new Sociology of Knowledge? Sociological Review Monograph. London, Routledge and Kegan Paul. 32: 196-233.
If there's anythning else I mentioned that anyone wants citations for, just ask!
